Fiddle music is an aural tradition that has been passed down for generations throughout American history. Its roots trace back to England, France, Germany, Ireland and Scotland, and were brought forth during the colonization of North America. Because of its portability and relatively loud volume, the fiddle became the favorite accompaniment for dance before recordings became available.
My background is in Texas style fiddling, a sub genre of old-time fiddle music which has emerged out of the dance music tradition. Intricate variations on basic melodies, unique bowing patterns, and rhythm guitar backup with walking bass lines are some distinguishing aspects of Texas style fiddling. Fiddle contests are held throughout the country and have become essential to the preservation of Texas style. Contests bring together fiddlers of all ages and backgrounds, providing inspiration and the opportunity for younger players to learn from the masters.
Old time fiddle music wouldn’t be thriving today if it weren’t for those who share the music with others through lessons, camps, contests, festivals, workshops, and jamming. I am proud to be a part of the preservation of this historical tradition as I share my love for fiddling with my students.
